The food has been described as mouth watering and five star quality. Georges restaurants are currently located in The Palms, Lekki and at the Adeniran Ogunsanya Shopping Centre. Desmo UK carried out the complete design and fit out of the project.

Georges at the Adeniran Ogunsanya Shopping Centre

(June – November 2010) – How we did it

The ‘Georges Chinese Cuisine’ project case study looks at our distinctive and contemporary solution to providing a restaurant which matches the high quality demanded from our client. The colourful design and furniture in the seating area has a strong architectural flair and seeks to exploit its location in an urban shopping centre. The restaurant makes a positive contribution to the local ambience of the food hall. see pictures.

Design process

The interior designers developed a contemporary design for the seating area, whilst using sturdy and easily maintained materials such as the feature wall in mosaic tiles. They also introduced a number of creative ideas such as fitting the tables into the wall to prevent fingerprint stains, hiding all the cables behind the wall and using a back lit image panel against block wall to ensure that a clean and crisp look is maintained.

Armonia, the interior designers were given a deadline of 3-days to come up with a design for the seating area and the servery area. Not only did they do it they even added a 3-D colour presentation! They also manufactured the tables, partition and procured the chairs from Kartel all within 4 weeks.

The kitchen and servery design was based on a functional flow to allow for an efficient and pleasant kitchen space which can be cleaned easily. The interior designers added value by introducing a glazed clear partition to give customers a view of the kitchen and adding back lit panels on each side of the servery so the owner can advertise and promote events and products The image panels are easy to clean, light to assemble and flexible.

Norlight had a brief to not only come up the lighting design and illuminations to the kitchen and offices it also included cove lighting to the seating area… in 3 weeks! They did it and manufactured them!

Procurement and manufacture

The main challenge of this project was the tight deadlines given for the procurement and manufacture of the key products. We had tight timescales to contend with as the European factories were quickly approaching their summer shutdown period.

The order was placed in mid June 2010 leaving 6 weeks to design and manufacture all products before European factories shut down. The Electrolux kitchen equipment would normally take 8 weeks to complete. We made a special trip to Italy to agree scope and push for completion within 7 weeks.

Construction process

We had a number of challenges which were overcome during the construction stage. The original shop location was changed from being an end shop to the middle of the food court and we quickly adapted the plans to suit without affecting the kitchen design. We had to include an extractor fan including an external motor to improve the air quality in the (newly positioned) kitchen. This was designed and manufactured by ‘Innocenti’, a specialist contractor, rather than Electrolux due to the unique specifications and tight deadlines.

We also took a decision to change the glazed partition to the seating area in the original design to solid blockwall, allowing for a huge 4.6m long by 2.7m high back lit image panel to be fitted against it. The panel was made in one piece to avoid intermittent aluminium frames, leading to the use of open top container for shipping due to the height.

We faced a serious construction challenge because the shopping centre had not allowed enough access for the delivery of unusually large/ wide items. Using a clever manoeuvre, we removed one of the side entrance screens and lifted the panel through a gap between the car park steel frame and the shopping mall external wall, before sliding it through the screen opening. We had permission from the centre manager and executed the offloading within 2 hours, despite a crowd of onlookers and concern from the management that it would not work. No damage was sustained during this operation due to the care and expertise of our professional team.

We also installed 2 No 5.5 metre wide motorised shutters to the restaurant, breaking the norm of most shutters in Nigeria which have a centre post every 2.2m. This was due to self supporting shutters procured from a leading UK supplier. It was a challenge to transport and install and to get the opening right but we successfully executed this.

Finishing and handover

We worked with Paintec in Italy to manufacture paint to the designers specification and specially adapted for fast food restaurants and kitchens. Unfortunately, disaster struck when the workers decided in their wisdom to apply the some of the paint without primer. We had to remove the paint 3 times and reapply in the seating and serving area! We insisted on getting it right… and we did!

Evaluation

We are excited to be involved with this up-market chinese restaurant. Desmo UK limited managed the complete fit out of the interior using products from Italy – paint, partitions, lights, industrial kitchen equipment, fridge and freezers, servery and counter, bain marie, furniture, extractor fan, signage and back lit image panel; Spain – tiles, and stainless steel trims; UK – Roller shutter and Juice maker; and Nigeria – POP, blocks and cement, sockets, suspended ceilings and paint.

We completed this to project timescales, despite several challenges along the way. To find out more about the products we supplied on this development, contact us.

The restaurant is now completed and can be visited at Adeniran Ogunsanya Shopping Center, Surulere, Lagos. We are currently looking forward to working with Georges again to open the 3rd restaurant in this very successful chain.

[5
